The concept of controlling pests is rooted in driving away pests by creating a repulsive environment that can either kill the pests or make them run away. Different chemicals having varied toxic levels that liberate toxins in the air and make living difficult not only for pests but also to some extent for humans are generally used for piperazine hexahydrate. Mosquito repellents, cockroach and other insect killers, rodent and reptile control chemicals that are widely used in homes and a variety of pesticides that are used for agriculture contain poisons in varied proportions that causes harm to humans if exposed for continuous period. This is the reason we find today that our food chain has been highly contaminated with deadly poisons that are slowly killing us not to talk about pests.
Cleaner homes
Insects are part and parcel of our homes, no matter whether we like it or not. Does it mean that insects are fond of humans? It is a difficult question to answer. But one thing can surely be said – we attract insects at our homes by our lifestyle and habits that create a congenial environment for them to thrive upon. So, the first step would be to keep homes clean so that insects do not make it their homes. This would reduce the problem to a good extent but not eliminate it. In order to eliminate it, you have to take up methods of natural pest control.
Driving away pests
Mosquitoes, cockroaches, ants, fleas and mites are so close to humans that you will hardly find homes that do not have such pests. Here are some homemade repellents and those made from natural ingredients that can work well to control these pests.
Mosquitoes –
Sealing all points of entry is the first thing to do. Remove all sources of stagnant water in your home as these are breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Make it a habit of regular refreshing of pet’s water bowl and changing bird baths as well as wading pools.
- Mosquitoes are repelled by burning rosemary or sage. Throwing it in barbeque coals can work well.
- Spraying a mixture of garlic juice and water (1:5) on our bodies can retain the repulsive action for 5-6 hours.
- Soy candles and citronella beeswax are effective in areas like patios or decks.
Cockroaches
- Soap water when sprayed on cockroaches can kill them.
- Slices of garlic or cucumber as well as bay leaves are good in repelling cockroaches.
- Diatomaceous earth also known as insect dust can be sprinkled in areas where cockroaches gather, like appliances and cabinets. These are harmless for humans but kill cockroaches soon.
Ants
Place peels or slices of cucumber, preferably bitter at entry points or in the kitchen to drive away ants.
Dry crushed cloves or mint leave are repulsive for ants. Leaving some mint tea bags in places infested with ants work well.
Draw la line with citrus oil or cayenne pepper to disrupt the ant column at entry points and see them run away.
